Avon Wins 2022 Graham Project of the Year Award
The Avon Wastewater Treatment Plant Nutrient Upgrades project in Avon, Colorado, won the 2022 Awards for Excellence Project of the Year Award for the Water Division. Other categories of this particular award were: Industrial, Buildings, Infrastructure, and Development. The Avon team’s focused implementation of the practices necessary to exemplify our four cornerstones – Safety, Quality, Schedule, and Budget – has made the Avon project a flagship for operational excellence.
The mission statement for this project, “Foster a team environment based on respect, integrity, and trust to collaboratively deliver a project that benefits our environment and community” was implemented early in pre-construction phase services and the team was able to develop trusted relationships with the client and Engineer.

This CMAR project added a multitude of process upgrades to meet new effluent requirements mandated by the US EPA Regulation 85. These upgrades primarily focused on the improvements of removing nutrients from effluent flows including concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus. The existing headworks equipment was replaced with modern step screens, channel slide gates, grit washer/compactor and HVAC equipment. Construction of the aeration basin expansion and a new secondary clarifier required complex work restrictions and coordination with plant operations. The equalization basins were modernized with new equipment inside tanks and the pump process gallery.
Moltz took every opportunity during the pre-construction phase to learn and understand the goals and objectives of not only the Owner’s management team but the concerns and needs of the plant operating staff as well. Our true partnered relationships with the Owner and Engineer only strengthened throughout construction, withstanding even the profound restrictions to personal interactions caused by the COVID pandemic.
